How to Improve Warehouse Storage Space

How to improve warehouse storage space

The costs of under-utilizing the storage space in a warehouse can quickly add up, especially if you are renting a warehouse for your business. Knowing how to improve warehouse storage space can help lower your business’ overhead, while also creating a much more efficient working environment for employees. In order to help you create a more organized and efficient warehouse, the team from Commander Warehouse has put together some simple tips for improving warehouse storage space.

Learn all about the best practices for organizing warehouse storage.

1. Install a Mezzanine

Mezzanines provide a great option for creating additional storage space in warehouses, as they can be used to create a second floor in the building. Mezzanines can be used to store anything from machinery and equipment to inventory and files.

2. Use Containers

Rather than using a one-size-fits-all approach like many warehouses do, consider using a range of different sized containers in order to fit the items being stored to the best sized containers. Doing so will help eliminate unused space within the containers and will make it easier for you to maximize storage capacity.

3. Store Items by Size

One of the easiest ways to optimize available warehouse space is to separate products by size and by storing items that are similar in size in the same area. Using this strategy will not only help you maximize storage space but will also help minimize the chances of smaller items being lost, as they will all be stored in one area of the warehouse.

4. Utilize Vertical Space

Using vertical space is a cost-effective solution for increasing storage capacity, as it is already available and does not require you to expand your warehouse or rent an offsite warehouse for additional storage. Consider speaking to an expert to find out which kinds of shelving options will help you get the most storage capacity out of your warehouse’s vertical space.

5. Minimize Aisle Widths

A simple way to help increase storage capacity is to minimize the width of aisles between shelving in the warehouse in order to create additional square footage. When minimizing aisle widths, make sure to take into consideration how wide the aisles need to be to allow a forklift to properly maneuver and operate.
