The problem:

How to cope with storage of steel ship components.
During construction multiple steel ship components are fabricated prior to being used in the ship construction / assembly.
These components need to be stored in an effective manner and allow accessibility for the fabricators to selectively retrieve them.
Current method was very crude. Components are placed on pallets that are spreadout on the asphalt / blacktop ground and not an efficient use of space. If the components are flat the pallets were stacked. This did not allow selective access.

The solution:

A custom stacking rack manufactured by Unitran and supplied by Commander Warehouse Equipment Ltd.
The Commander / Unitran Team were able to design and engineer a stacking rack able to accommodate two pallets of small components or one pallet of large components. 103” wide x 55” deep c/w 18” or 30” high stacking rack posts.
These stacking racks were engineered to have a capacity of 3,000 lbs and be stacked up to three rack high.
The racks have the flexibility of being placed anywhere around the facility. In dead areas where storage space was available i.e. around perimeters when components are not required but being able to move them closer to assembly / construction when required.
One of the interesting features added to the stacking racks was fork pockets for centering and securing the load during forklift use.

Conclusion:

The custom stacking racks have been very well received by the customer. The only change they would like is capacity stickers which we will provide in future.

Since their original order of 80 custom staking racks, they have ordered an additional 45 with a commitment to add more as budget permits.
