Alternative Racking Arrangements for Warehouses

Choosing the right racking setup can significantly improve how products are stored, accessed, and moved throughout a facility. Whether you are managing a large warehouse or a smaller storage space, alternative racking arrangements can help improve workflow and make better use of available square footage. At Commander Warehouse, we know how important it is to create an efficient and organized storage system. That is why we have outlined some key insights into choosing alternative racking arrangements for warehouses.

Racking Options Available for Warehouses

When evaluating racking solutions, it is essential to understand how each type functions and where it works best. Depending on your inventory size, product type, and equipment used, some racking systems may offer greater benefits than others.

Selective Pallet Racking

Selective pallet racking is one of the most commonly used systems due to its simplicity and ease of access. This configuration allows forklifts to easily reach every pallet, making it ideal for operations with a high number of SKUs or fast product turnover. While it may not offer the highest storage density, it supports flexible picking and restocking.

Drive-In and Drive-Through Racking

For high-density storage, drive-in and drive-through racking systems offer an excellent solution. These arrangements minimize aisle space by allowing forklifts to enter the racking structure to place or retrieve pallets. They work best for bulk storage with fewer product types and can greatly increase storage volume within the same footprint.

Push-Back and Pallet Flow Racking

Both push-back and pallet flow racking systems allow for deeper storage and support inventory rotation. Push-back racking uses inclined rails and rolling carts, allowing pallets to slide forward when one is removed. Pallet flow systems, on the other hand, rely on gravity rollers and are ideal for first-in, first-out (FIFO) inventory needs. These options help increase efficiency in picking and restocking while keeping products organized.

Cantilever Racking

Cantilever racking is specifically designed for storing long, bulky items like piping, lumber, or furniture. With open fronts and no vertical obstructions, it allows for quick loading and unloading. Similarly, businesses that handle long metal rods, pipes, or bars often use bar stock storage racking as a tailored solution to keep these materials secure and accessible. This type of racking is essential for industries that work with heavy, awkwardly shaped materials and need robust support systems.

Why Aisle Width Matters More Than Most Warehouse Managers Think

At Commander Warehouse, we’ve seen facilities locked into inefficient layouts long after their equipment mix has changed, and aisle width is almost always part of the problem. The wrong clearances don’t just slow your operation down; they force every other decision around them. Racking configurations, forklift selection, throughput capacity: all of it flows from...

Understanding Seismic Requirements for Warehouse Racking

Seismic design is a baseline requirement that shapes how racking systems are specified, installed, and maintained. At Commander Warehouse, understanding seismic requirements for warehouse racking is part of how we approach every project in Western Canada, where seismic activity is a documented engineering consideration, not a theoretical one. Getting this right from the start protects...
