Drive-in vs. Drive-Thru Pallet Racking Systems

drive in and drive thru pallet racking

Regarding warehouse storage solutions, pallet racking systems are a popular choice. They allow you to maximize your warehouse space by utilizing the vertical height of your facility; however, there are two main types of pallet racking systems: drive-in and drive-thru. While they both serve the same purpose of efficiently storing and organizing products in a warehouse, they differ in some significant ways. As leading providers of pallet racking systems, the team at Commander Warehouse Equipment knows that choosing the right type of pallet racking can make all the difference. With so many options on the market, deciding which is best for your specific needs can be overwhelming. That is why we have compiled some information on drive-in vs. drive-thru pallet racking systems.

Learn about some common pallet rack mistakes to avoid.

Drive-in Pallet Racking Systems

Drive-in pallet racking is designed to allow forklifts to enter the structure from only one end, with each row of products stacked on top of the other. This makes it an excellent option for facilities that need to store large quantities of similar products in a smaller space; however, because it can be difficult to access individual items within the rows, this type of racking is best suited for businesses that operate on a first-in, last-out basis.

Drive-in pallet racking systems are ideal for warehouses with limited floor space but ample vertical height, as they can reduce the number of aisles required for storage. This type of system maximizes storage density, as there is no need for aisles between each row of racks; however, this also means that accessing specific pallets may be more time-consuming, as all other pallets obstruct access to those at the back of a particular row.

Drive-Thru Pallet Racking Systems

Drive-thru pallet racking offers more flexibility than drive-in systems by allowing forklifts to enter from either side of an aisle, creating two separate aisles. This will enable businesses greater product access and provides an easier way to rotate stock according to expiration dates or other prioritization needs. Drive-thru pallet racking systems offer faster access times since you can easily reach any pallet without moving others out of the way first. This type of system is ideal for warehouses that need to store perishable items or those with a high turnover rate.
